American checkers is played on an 8×8 board. Each player starts with 12 pieces on the dark squares of their first three rows. Pieces move diagonally forward one square at a time. To capture an opponent's piece, jump over it diagonally into the empty square behind it. Captures are mandatory when available. A piece reaching the last row is crowned King and can then move and capture in any diagonal direction — forward or backward.
Openings in checkers establish critical positional advantages from the first few moves. The CheckersClub openings database covers Old Faithful, Bristol Cross, Double Corner, Dyke, Kelso and dozens of other named systems. Under the 3-Move Ballot format — the standard for American championship play — players must study 156 officially sanctioned opening lines.
